Study conditions and student involvement

The main campus, located in Bielany in the north-west part of Toruń, houses eight faculties and one of the biggest University libraries in Poland offering students and staff about 3 million books, periodicals and special collection items, with access to over 132,000 books and electronic journals through its computer network. Operating within the structure of the University Library, Kujawsko-Pomorska Biblioteka Cyfrowa (a digital library) has the task of digitising university resources to provide everyone with easy remote access to its resources from home.

The main Rector’s Office and the University Auditorium are also found on campus. Since the completion of two new buildings, Collegium Humanisticum and the University Sports Centre, the campus has become one of the largest in Poland where over 20,000 students live and study every day. Six out of eleven student dormitories are here, offering accommodation to 3,300, in single, double and triple rooms, each with phones and free access to the Internet. Thanks to the newly-built tramline, the Toruń campus is well-connected to the Gothic city-centre and the districts east of it.

The University has a well-developed ICT infrastructure and as the national first NCU initiated the creation of wireless zones offering Internet connectivity through the Eduroam European system. Wi-Fi access is available in all of the buildings where teaching takes place and in libraries, and free Internet zones are still being expanded.

At Collegium Medicum in Bydgoszcz conditions for studying are also constantly improving. The most modern and very well-equipped building belongs to the Faculty of Pharmacy. In 2013 a new part of Dr Antoni Jurasz University Hospital No.1 was open, housing the Hospital Emergency Medicine Unit, the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, an operation theatre complex, and the Sterilisation Unit. It also has a helipad. Their construction was one of the biggest investments in the NCU’s history.

The University is very welcoming to students from other Polish or European universities; it participates in national and international student exchange programmes (MOST and ERASMUS+). The University can also accommodate disabled students. Students with any kind of disability, regardless of its severity, can study at the NCU since architectural obstacles have been systematically eliminated in classroom buildings and student dormitories.

Good studies offer not only an opportunity to listen to interesting lectures, which give access to the latest achievements of science, and participate in other high quality classes. A good university must also equally take interest in the creation of conditions for its students to develop their diverse individual interests and fulfil their creative passions.

The University definitely encourages various proactive student attitudes. At the Faculties nearly 200 student research interest clubs operate, seventy of them at Collegium Medicum alone. Club activists organise study camps, students’ conferences, and competitions. The University also encourages students to do volunteer work and organise and participate in various charity events

Each year there are more and more sports available to students. Today they have a choice of several disciplines, including aikido/judo, swimming, futsal, basketball, handball, volleyball, badminton, indoor climbing and track-and-field.

At the University, there is one of the oldest and best student clubs in Poland called Od Nowa, which was founded in 1958. The club, redesigned in 2012, is also the site of Niebieski kocyk Student Film Club and galleries: 011 and Dworzec zachodni. This is also the place where well-known festivals are organized: Toruń Blues Meeting, Africa Reggae Festival, Jazz Od Nowa Festival, and also Alternative Klamra Theatre Festival and Majowy Buum Poetycki (poetry festival).

Other examples of where students can pursue their other passions include the NCU student theatres and the university choirs. Whoever is interested in journalism can not only study journalism or social communication, but also get experience working for student Radio Sfera and University Internet Television, where programmes (news, documentaries, reports and live broadcasts) are co-produced by students.

Many people choose Toruń as a place of study not only because of the reputation of the University and the beauty of the city, but also because of the relatively lower cost of living. Toruń guarantees a high quality of education for less expenditure.
